Oficialmente conocido como el Mercado Ernesto Pugibet por la calle en la que se encuentra, el clásico Mercado de San Juan puede ser un poco difícil de encontrar. Fue construido en el sitio de la antigua fábrica de cigarros  el Buen Tono y a veces escucharás ese nombre para la Plaza San Juan. El mercado y la plaza se llaman así por el nombre cristianizado del vecindario, “San Juan Moyotlan“.  Moyotlan es el nombre náhuatl del vecindario  más antiguo de Tenochtitlan que significaba “vecindario de mosquitos.”

El mercado de San Juan es más famoso por vender alimentos “gourmet” lo cual en México significa que son alimentos importados y europeos. De hecho, en el mercado no hay  dificultades para encontrar alimentos enlatados y en conserva y una excelente selección de quesos y carnes estilo “deli”.  El mercado también es uno de los favoritos entre muchos de los restauranteros más exclusivos de la Ciudad. Puedes encontrar todo tipo de productos de otros estados de México, además de algunas cosas de Europa, Asia y América.

A menudo lo más impresionante para los visitantes son los puestos de fruta y verduras donde la producción suele ser más limpia y brillante que en mercados similares lo que los convierte en puestos ideales para realizar excelentes fotos.  Los fines de semana, es posible que el mercado esté realmente lleno de invitados internacionales y de otras ciudades.

Originalmente era un mercado temporal para vendedores desplazados por una reorganización de los mercados de la ciudad en 1933.  Este sitio solía ser un almacén para la fábrica de cigarros del Buen Tono. La iglesia del Buen Tono a la vuelta de la esquina en la Plaza de San Juan es todo lo que queda de esa que, alguna vez, fue una importante fábrica local.
