Class 17, Part 2. The clock, the seven days, and the etiquette of price — in Malayalam script, Manglish and English.

Part 1 built the numbers and the sentences that buy anything. Part 2 finishes the job.

TIME IS ONE WORD AND ONE ENDING
മണി (mani) is the clock word. എത്ര മണി? (ethra mani?) what time is it. എട്ടു മണി (ettu mani) eight o'clock. Add the dative -ക്ക് and you get "at": എട്ടു മണിക്ക് (ettu manikku) at eight o'clock · ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് (uchaykku) at midday. Same ending, every time.

ഇന്ന് (innu) today · ഇന്നലെ (innale) yesterday · നാളെ (naale) tomorrow — plus രാവിലെ (raavile) morning, വൈകുന്നേരം (vaikunneram) evening, രാത്രി (raathri) night.

Every day ends in ആഴ്ച (aazhcha), week. തിങ്കളാഴ്ച (thingalaazhcha) Monday · ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച (chovvaazhcha) Tuesday · ബുധനാഴ്ച (budhanaazhcha) Wednesday · വ്യാഴാഴ്ച (vyaazhaazhcha) Thursday · വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച (velliyaazhcha) Friday · ശനിയാഴ്ച (shaniyaazhcha) Saturday · ഞായറാഴ്ച (njaayaraazhcha) Sunday.

Now look at what they mean. Thingal is the Moon. Chovva is Mars. Budhan is Mercury. Vyaazham is Jupiter. Velli is Venus. Shani is Saturn. Njaayar is the Sun. Seven days, seven planets, in that exact order — the same order as English Monday/Saturday/Sunday and French lundi/mardi/mercredi. The Babylonian week travelled to Kerala through Sanskrit astronomy and to Europe through Greece and Rome, and met again here. Learners never forget the days after this.

THE CULTURE NOTE THAT SAVES YOU
Bargaining in Kerala is narrower than visitors assume. Fixed price where there is a till. Negotiable where there is a basket. And കുറയ്ക്കാമോ? said with a smile is a question; said flatly it accuses the seller of cheating. When they will not move, the graceful close is one word: ശരി (shari).
