Today's phrase is "to be rigged" which means something has been set up to operate in some kind of unfair way. 

Today's phrase is to be rigged. Now when something is rigged, it is believed that it's operated using some kind of dishonest behaviour to promote a desired outcome. Now, let me just give you some examples to show you what I mean:

So, if we say, for example, 

The job vacancy has been advertised in the newspaper but I believe it's been rigged. We all know who's going to win.

 The football match was definitely rigged. I don't think the football players were playing in their usual way today. 

The competition to win a holiday in the local newspaper has been won by an employee of that newspaper. That was definitely rigged.

Hello. This is the podcast episode 23. I've been a bit busy lately with a lot of preparation both at work and in my personal life. It's hard with irregular sleeping hours and hay fever, but I'm trying my best. I've received some requests and suggestions for improvement regarding the podcast, so I'll try to reflect them little by little.

今日は早口言葉について話したいと思います。みなさんは早口言葉を知っていますか？英語ではtongue twisterといいます。正しく発音するのが難しいフレーズを、早く言えるかどうか試す遊びです。早口言葉は日本語にもたくさんあります。今日は３つの早口言葉を紹介したいと思います。

Today I would like to talk about Hayakuchi Kotoba. Do you know Hayakuchi Kotoba? In English it is called “tongue twister”. It is a game to see if you can say a phrase that is difficult to pronounce correctly as quickly as possible. There are many Hayakuchi Kotoba in Japanese, too. Today I would like to introduce three Hayakuchi Kotoba.

まず紹介するのは、「赤巻紙　青巻紙　黄巻紙」です。「赤、青、黄」は色の名前です。「巻紙」とは、昔手紙を書くときに使われた紙のことです。つまり、赤と青と黄色の３種類の巻紙です。とくにストーリーはありません。それでは言ってみましょう。まずはゆっくり。「赤巻紙　青巻紙　黄巻紙」。そして早く。「赤巻紙　青巻紙　黄巻紙」。

The first one to be introduced is the ”Aka-Makigami, Ao-Makigami, Ki-Makigami”. ‘Aka(red), ao(blue), ki(yellow)’ are the names of the colours. ‘Makigami (roll of paper)’ refers to the paper used for writing letters in the olden days. In other words, there are three types of rolled paper: red, blue and yellow. There is no particular story behind this. Now let's say it. First, slowly. ”Aka-Makigami (red roll paper), Ao-Makigami (blue roll paper), Ki-Makigami (yellow roll paper)”. Then, quickly. ”Aka-Makigami, Ao-Makigami, Ki-Makigami”

次に紹介するのは、「生麦　生米　生卵」です。これも前の例と同じように、３つの名詞を並べたフレーズです。「生」は、料理していない食べ物の状態のことです。「麦、米、卵」は食べ物の名前ですね。他にも、「生肉」や「生クリーム」という単語が日常的によく使われます。それでは言ってみましょう。まずはゆっくり。「生麦　生米　生卵」。早く。「生麦　生米　生卵」。

最近日本は暖かくなって春だな～って感じる日が多くて、桜も咲いてきたよ！みんなが住んでいるところはどうかな？そういえば、桜がどのくらい咲いているかは特別な数え方をするの知ってる？桜が咲き始めたころは「開花宣言」っていうよ。

It's getting warmer and warmer in Japan these days, and the cherry blossoms are blooming! How about where you live? Oh, by the way, did you know that there is a special way to count how much cherry blossoms are in bloom? When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, it is called "Kaika sengen" (declaration of blooming)

今年、2022年は3月17日に福岡で「開花宣言」があって一番早かったよ。そして、その次に3月20日に東京で「開花宣言」があったんだよね。北海道は4月20日ごろに咲く予定らしいよ。毎年「さくら開花予想」っていう地図があるからググって見てみてね。

This year, 2022, Fukuoka was the first to declare the blooming of cherry blossoms on March 17. The next earliest was Tokyo, which declared the blooming of cherry blossoms on March 20. Hokkaido is scheduled to bloom around April 20. There is a map called "cherry blossom forecast" every year, so please Google it and check it out.

桜が半分くらい咲けば50％咲いているの意味になる「五分（ぶ）ざき」っていうんだよね。だいたい80％咲いたら「満開」って言ってお花見をしたりする人が多くなるよ。なんで80％は「八分ざき」じゃなくて「満開」かっていうと「今、桜は100％咲いています！」っていうともう散り始めるかららしいよ。

If half of the cherry trees are in bloom, it is called "gobu zaki," meaning that 50% of the cherry trees are in bloom. When 80% of the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, it is called "mankai," and many people go cherry blossom viewing. The reason why 80% is called "full bloom" and not "hachibu zaki(80% bloom)" is because "100% of the cherry trees are in full bloom now!" means the cherry blossoms will already begin to fall.

ちなみに「開花宣言」があったらニュースでは「さくらの便りがありました」っていうんだよね。「便り」っていうのは「手紙」って意味だよ。例えば「本日、福岡から桜の便りがありました」みたいな。だいたい「開花宣言」から1週間くらいかけて満開になっていくから、もし日本のニュースを見ることがあれば注意して見てみてね

By the way, when the "blooming of cherry blossoms" is declared, the news says "there is a "tayori" of cherry blossoms". The word "tayori" means "letter".  For example, "Today, we received "tayori" of cherry blossoms from Fukuoka". It usually takes about a week after the "bloom declaration" for the cherry blossoms to be in full bloom, so if you watch the news in Japan, pay attention to it.

지난 주말에 친구와 함께 공원에 갔습니다. 날씨가 아주 맑고 따뜻해서 사람들이 많았습니다. 우리는 먼저 편의점에 들러서 음료수와 과자를 샀습니다. 그리고 공원 벤치에 앉아서 이야기를 나누었습니다.

친구는 요즘 회사 일이 바쁘다고 했습니다. 그래서 스트레스를 많이 받는다고 했습니다. 저는 친구에게 운동을 추천했습니다. 운동을 하면 스트레스가 줄어들고 몸도 건강해진다고 말했습니다.

이야기를 나눈 후, 우리는 공원 안에 있는 산책로를 걸었습니다. 걷는 동안 꽃이 많이 피어 있어서 사진도 찍었습니다. 특히 노란 개나리가 예뻤습니다. 또, 자전거를 타는 사람들과 강아지를 산책시키는 사람들도 많았습니다.

공원 구경을 마친 후, 근처에 있는 맛집에 가서 점심을 먹었습니다. 우리는 김치찌개와 불고기를 주문했습니다. 음식이 정말 맛있었고, 양도 많았습니다. 친구도 만족해했습니다.

이렇게 즐거운 주말을 보내고 나니 기분이 아주 좋았습니다. 다음 주말에도 날씨가 좋으면 다른 공원에 가고 싶습니다.

このPodcastは、日本語を勉強しているみなさんに向けたPodcastです。

今日は、記憶について。

みなさんは
めっちゃ昔のことでも覚えていることはありますか？

僕は基本的に記憶力が弱いと思うので、あんまり覚えられない方なんですけど、こんな僕が謎にとても良く覚えていることがあります。

それは、音楽です。
イントロ、曲のはじまりを聞いて、1、2秒だけで、曲がわかります。ただし、これは条件があります。僕がラジオを良く聴いていた時の音楽に限ります。15才ー25才ぐらいまで、FMラジオで良くかかっていた、日本の音楽に限ります。これは、本当です。ずっと覚えているわけではないんですが、1、2秒その音楽を聴いただけで、誰の曲か、さらには曲名も思い出せることもあります。自分でもおどろきますが、この記憶はなくならないと思います。

なんの話をしたいか、ということなんですけど、語学の勉強って、結構記憶力も重要なポイントになりますよね。でも覚えるのはとても大変ですね。

それで、記憶力のことを時々考えます。
で、この僕の音楽の謎の記憶力から考えられることは、覚えようとしないことも大切なのかなと思います。僕は音楽を覚えようとした訳ではなくて、ラジオで良くかかっていたから聴く回数が多くなって、自然と覚えたんだと思います。

だから、毎日見たり聴いたりすることが大切なんだと思います。

脳の仕組みを調べていた時に知ったことの1つですが、脳ははじめは全然覚えようとしないですが、毎日同じ情報があると、それを大切だと認識するそうです。要は脳をだます、ということですね。脳に必要な情報だと認識させることができれば、自然と覚える、かもしれないです。

僕は今も決して記憶力は良くないですが、この自分の音楽の謎の記憶力と、毎日ふれる情報は必要だと認識する、という脳の特性を利用して、記憶に定着させようと実験しているところです。
