Most adult conversation is relaying: she told me, he said, they asked whether. Malayalam does all of it with one small word. എന്ന് goes after the quoted words and before the verb of saying, and the quote itself never changes: no shifting I to he, no moving the tense back. You build reported statements, questions and yes-no questions with -ഓ, learn fused forms such as വരുമെന്ന്, and use എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു as a soft 'I think'. You also get the naming use, X എന്ന് പറയും, and ഇതിനെ എന്ത് പറയും?, the best vocabulary question there is. Words and phrases in this class: നാളെ വരും എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു (naale varum ennu avan paranju) – he said he will come tomorrow സുഖമില്ല എന്ന് അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു (sukhamilla ennu aval paranju) – she said she is not well ഇത് കഴിക്കരുത് എന്ന് ഡോക്ടർ പറഞ്ഞു (ithu kazhikkaruthu ennu doctor paranju) – the doctor said not to eat this നിങ്ങൾ വരില്ല എന്ന് ഞാൻ വിചാരിച്ചു (ningal varilla ennu njaan vichaarichu) – I thought you were not coming മഴ വരും എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു (mazha varum ennu thonnunnu) – it seems it will rain ഞാൻ എവിടെ പോകുന്നു എന്ന് അവൻ ചോദിച്ചു (njaan evide pokunnu ennu avan chodichu) – he asked where I was going ഞാൻ വരുമോ എന്ന് അവൻ ചോദിച്ചു (njaan varumo ennu avan chodichu) – he asked whether I would come അവൻ വരുമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു (avan varumennu paranju) – he said he would come അവന് സുഖമില്ലെന്ന് കേട്ടു (avanu sukhamillennu kettu) – I heard he is unwell ഇതിനെ മലയാളത്തിൽ എന്ത് പറയും?
