Açıklama
English builds politeness with "please", "could you", "would you mind" and lots of "thank you". Malayalam builds it differently: with small softening words, the choice of "you", the shape of the verb, and a habit of saying no without saying no. The typical mistake is translating "please" word for word: ദയവായി വെള്ളം തരൂ (dayavaayi vellam tharoo) = Kindly give water. In this episode: • Onnu: the magic "just" • Aamo: "could you?" • Commands: three levels • Asking about plans: varunnundo and varumo • Saying no without saying no • Thanks and sorry in real life • An invented scene: at leela chechi's house • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: ഒന്ന് വരാമോ? (onnu varaamo?) = Could you just come here? ഒന്ന് നോക്കിയേ (onnu nokkiye) = Just have a look. ഒന്ന് പതുക്കെ പറയാമോ? (onnu pathukke parayaamo?) = Could you say it slowly, please? ഒന്ന് മാറി നിൽക്കാമോ? (onnu maari nilkkaamo?) = Could you just move aside? തരാമോ? (tharaamo?) = Could you give it? സഹായിക്കാമോ? (sahaayikkaamo?) = Could you help? ഒരു ഫോട്ടോ എടുക്കാമോ? (oru photo edukkaamo?) = Could you take a photo? കുറച്ച് (kurachu) = a little. It softens the size of what you ask for. വാ (vaa) = come. To children and very close family only. വരൂ (varoo) = please come. Polite, to guests and elders. ഇരിക്കൂ (irikkoo) = please sit. Polite. ഇരിക്ക് (irikku) = sit. Casual, to family. വരുന്നുണ്ടോ? (varunnundo?) = Are you coming? It checks a plan politely, without pressure. Learn Spoken Malayalam at Home: a complete course in everyday spoken Malayalam for English speakers.
