Most of your Malayalam will be typed, forwarded and voice-noted, not spoken face to face. This class covers the language on the screen: Manglish and why it has no standard spelling, the return to Malayalam script on phones, and the short messages that fill a Kerala chat, from എവിടെ? to ഇറങ്ങി. It explains the daily good-morning forward as a signal of care, why voice notes are the best listening material a learner can get, and why switching between Malayalam and English mid-sentence is a sign of skill, not a lack of it. Words and phrases in this class: മെസ്സേജ് (messeju) – message അയക്കുക (ayakkuka) – to send എത്തിയോ? (ethiyo?) – have you arrived? എത്തി (ethi) – arrived വരുന്നുണ്ടോ? (varunnundo?) – are you coming? ഇറങ്ങി (irangi) – I have set off ഒരു അഞ്ചു മിനിറ്റ് (oru anchu minittu) – about five minutes തിരക്കിലാണ് (thirakkilaanu) – I am busy പിന്നെ പറയാം (pinne parayaam) – I will tell you later കണ്ടു (kandu) – seen it എന്തുപറ്റി? (enthupatti?) – what happened? സുപ്രഭാതം (suprabhaatham) – good morning ശുഭരാത്രി (shubharaathri) – good night In this class: • Manglish, its missing spelling rules, and the return to Malayalam script • The screen vocabulary and the short messages you will send every day • The good-morning forward, and voice notes as free listening practice • Code-switching, and a short message exchange to say aloud Quizzes below.
