Let’s break down this iconic dialogue:

मेरे पास (Mere paas): ‘I have’ or ‘I possess.’

मेरे (Mere): My.
पास (Paas): With or near.
माँ (Maa): ‘Mother.’ This is a simple yet profound term for ‘mother’ in Hindi.
है (Hai): ‘Is’ — This is the present tense form of the verb ‘to be,’ used here to indicate possession or existence.

Nous sommes à l’École américaine à Paris. Les élèves sont américains, mais le professeur est français. C’est le premier jour de l’école et la première leçon de français.
Le professeur fait l’appel : les élèves doivent répondre « Présent, monsieur » ou « Absent, monsieur ». Il insiste pour qu’on parle français et non anglais.
Bill, un élève américain, a du mal à comprendre. Le professeur lui dit : « Dans cette classe, on parle français. J’insiste ! Il est défendu de parler anglais en classe. »
