THE THING NOBODY TELLS YOU
ഒന്ന് (onnu) is one when it stands alone. In front of a noun it changes shape completely to ഒരു (oru).
ഒരു ചായ - oru chaaya - one tea
ഒരു ദിവസം - oru divasam - one day
You never say ഒന്ന് ചായ. No other number does this, exactly as English splits a/an off from one.

English groups digits in threes. India groups in twos after the first three, so 1234567 is read twelve lakh thirty four thousand five hundred and sixty seven. Read Indian news, salaries or property prices and you will meet ലക്ഷം and കോടി constantly and never meet the word million.
