Type might be a little more appropriate for use in formal situations. But in causal conversation, there's no difference at all between them.

They are usually interchangeable. You might use the word “type” If something has a specific category and even then, “kind” would be understood. For example, “type” might be more appropriate when asking about a computer. What type is it? Laptop? Desktop? Or tablet? Whereas “kind” is more appropriate to use to distinguish more subtle differences. Like you might ask what “kind” of ice cream to distinguish a flavor. It’s all ice cream. A “type” of ice cream would be gelato vs. Ic cream vs. frozen custard—where there are more significant differences that could place them in different categories. Most people DO tend to use these interchangeably in spoken language, though.

The difference is SO tiny, I honestly can’t even explain it (as an English speaker). They are the same, you can use them interchangeably :)
