Hi! From this passage, how can we learn that Maggie and Stephen were in the same boat? From the first paragraph, I believed that Stephen was together with Maggie in the same boat. However, in the second paragraph, Maggie was sad to know that Stephen wasn't by her side after her real waking. Then, kept reading to the fifth paragraph, Maggie saw Stephen waa there....So, was the night too dark for Maggie to discern Stephen's existence? While reading, I thought this was something like the application of the stream of consciousness, so I believed that Stephen wasn't there, it was all Maggie's unreal dream since I hadn't known about this novel before doing this reading. The question set after thus reading is asking whether Stephen was together with Maggie in the same boat, and I wrote NO. As a result, I was wrong. 🤣🤣🤣

Here's a start. Maggie is tormented by guilt. Stephen is either dead or for some reason disappeared from her life. In paragraph 1, she is asleep and sees him in a dream. She dreams of rowing in a boat with Stephen, but that had to be a different boat because a boat with oars does not have a deck. When he disappeared, they had been rowing the rowboat, but the boat turned over. In her dream she imagines him walking the deck of the real boat tired out by the rowing he had done in the row boat, and then lying down to sleep at her feet. In this imagined scene, he is still a part of her life. The row boat might not be real at all. It may just be a metaphor of some sort. In paragraph 2, she drifts in and out of sleep. She dreams again of being in the row boat with Stephen. In the dream, their rowboat passes another rowboat with two people, Lucy and Philip. Maggie and Stephen's boat turns over when Maggie reaches out to Philip. This may be a metaphor for something that happened in their lives. For example, Maggie may have betrayed Stephen by "reaching out" to this other man. At that moment their boat (their relationship?) began to sink. When Maggie wakes up, she confronts the reality that Stephen is not there. The reason is not clear. My guess is that their life together has been somehow destroyed, and that destruction was due to do to something between Maggie and Philip. maybe I'll read more later
