‎The last sentence in the article in the picture. These days a sign across the road to the town tells people to stay out. How should 'across the road' be understood in this context? Generally speaking, does 'cross the road' mean to span the entire road or to be on the opposite side of the road? Thank you so much!

Your understanding of ‘across’ is correct. It can mean ‘on the other side of’ or it can mean ‘from one side to the other side of’. From the context, it means the latter here.

A sign 'across' the road would be from one side of the road to the other.

I interpret it to mean that to enter the town on that road you would drive UNDER the sign.
