pasapalabra orestes
Hi there, would you explain to me the meaning of this sentence "this made Mary *very cross indeed*" I don't understand it at 100% I think it's just only saying that she's angry or something related to. I'm basic in English, so I did my best writing this, please let me know if there's any mistake in my text. Psdt: What's the difference "crossly" and "angrily". 😃

It just means she is angry. The ‘indeed’ emphasises she is cross. Crossly isn’t a common word. She reacted angrily. You wouldn’t say She reacted crossly.

"Cross" and "angry" are similar but not the same. Being cross is milder: irritated, in a bad mood. When you are with a person who is cross, you "walk on eggshells". When you are with a person who is angry, you escape to somewhere else.

Cross is a slightly elevated word some people still use. It seems to be encountered more a few decades ago, especially in England. Maybe people in the UK still use it more. Since Mary was also a very common name about the same time, it pairs well with cross.
