I don't understand this sentence: picking out the gentle curve of the Esplanade round as far as the harbour. Could anyone explain it to me? "The mist was patchy; then suddenly, as they drove in front of the Imperial Hotel, it lifted, and a long line of lights stretched out ahead of them, picking out the gentle curve of the Esplanade round as far as the harbour."

In this context, we say the row of light "pick out" the esplanade, meaning that they make it possible to see the shape of the esplanade. Without the lights, it wouldn't be possible to see it at all, but with the lights, you can just about see the shape.

You know how you have street lights lining up a driveway? When you stand at the beginning of the driveway at night and you look, you can only see the lights showing you the curve of the driveway…..
Did you get it?

The harbor is a place near the river, where ships are moored or kept. So the writer is trying to tell us that the esplanade goes all the way down to the harbor. Like it’s far… you get it now?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an esplanade is a "level open stretch of paved or grassy ground".
So, like Peace mentioned, I think it means that as the mist thinned and the lights showed the curve of this paved ground.
