This week, I looked up about the Japanese arts that “Kanagawa-oki nami ura” by Katsushika Hokusai. This art is painting about push boat going in the rough sea and Mt. Fuji. I watched some video about this art and how to make art print and how to draw to a paper. When people make an art print, it puts some cream on a woodblock and puts a paper and remove fiber. After that it carved along the line by a chisel and puts some paints on the woodblock. And a paper puts on the woodblock and print with a baren which is a pad for printing woodcuts. When people make an Ukiyo-e art print, there is a team of craftsmen the artist, carver, and printer worked together to make prints. I watched how to print an art print “Kanagawa-oki nami ura” by Katsushika Hokusai. The black outlines are created first, followed by seven colors. The outlines are created with the “key block”. Pigment is applied to the block with a brush. A circular pad called a baren is rubbed against the hand-made paper to transfer the pigment. The colors are applied one at a time and the waves are colored with Prussian blue. It was very interesting to watch because the printing skill is very great, and it is fun to watch how to make an art print.
