I came across an article online about "Ammonia For Shipping Fuel". I would like to summarize and share some of the interesting points here.
Nippon Yusen Kaisha(NKY Line) announced they got approval in principle(AIP) of ammonia fuel ammonia bunkering vessels co-designed by Seatrium in Singapore and a consortium from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai(ClassNK). This is the big step to commercialize ammonia which has been attracting a lot of attention as one of new shipping fuel. They plan to design a ship which carries ammonia as fuel and provides it with ships. If the ship enters service, it will be the world's first ship which is able to provide ammonia fuel with others.
Ammonia doesn't generate carbon oxide (CO2) even if it is burned. Hence, it is said to be one of the favorite for the decarbonization. Now, it is used as main ingredient such as fertilizer and it will be expected to expand demanding as the use of hydrogen carrier in the future. It has the downside which is hard to burn, but it is easy to procure large volume. It also has greater energy efficiency than hydrogen's one and can reduce the size of fuel tank. That's why NKY line thinks ammonia fuel is suitable for ships. I knew for the first time that ship industries also continue creating innovation to contribute to making the decarbonized society a reality.
I barely take a ship, but I want to focus what kind of fuel the ship uses when I get to do it in the future.
