Like Vang said :-). Dustbin and anything with the word "rubbish" in it sound distinctly British to my ears.Trash can is a bit of a catch-all term here in the US: from a small plastic basket in the office to the bigger metal version commonly used in kitchens and the big plastic one in the garage. To specifically refer to the small one with holes, I would say waste (paper) basket. I would say bin = can and garbage = trash are synonyms for all intents and purposes :-).
