Chinese speakers, what's the difference between 狗 & 犬?
I know both means "dog", but I'm curious what is the difference between these two characters. 谢谢!

In modern Chinese for daily talk, we use "狗" to refer to "dog", while “犬” is usually used in words like "猎犬" “恶犬” "犬齿" or some idioms like "画虎不成反类犬", in short, you can use "狗" for most cases. “犬” is more like a zoology term for “狗”

“犬” is more formal and traditional at the same time. So you can see it used in many idioms. Because most of idioms were developed from traditional Chinese articles.
“狗” is less formal and very common in our daily conversation.

Hi Becky, my name is Jun from Taiwan. I would like to respond to your question. Normally, we use 狗 in daily conversation more than 犬. 狗 is like dogs or puppies, but 犬 is kinda like canines. If you see a dog on the street, you won't say "hey, there is a canine", but you will say "look, there is a dog/puppy". If you have any further questions, just reply to my message. :)
