Only your second sentence is correct. The first sentence is wrong because 'Now' refers to present time, while 'He got...' is past.
Here's a tip to help you see the difference : try to think of 'used to' like any other adjective, such as 'angry' for example. Start by thinking about the difference between He got angry and He is angry.
'He got angry' means that he changed from being calm to angry: this focuses on the process of becoming angry in the past.
