I was listening to Spanish radio today and I think I heard "ocho a las nueve de la mañana", which made me think "it's eight until nine", and when I looked at the clock it read 8:52. Is this an informal way to tell time in Spanish? Am I going crazy because I'm studying too much?
Maybe they said 'ocho PARA las nueve'. It is another way of saying 'las nueve menos ocho (minutos)'. This way of telling the time is more common in Latin America. In Spain I have only heard it on the radio and not that often.

I guess is typical, in Spain. In Canary islands is always a hour less , and they are also Spanish, so they listen the same radio.

No creo que la pregunta de Cameron tenga algo que ver con España o Canarias. En inglés cuando se habla con imprecisión, a veces se utiliza "Spanish radio" cuando en realidad se quiere decir "Spanish-language radio".
