Well, most of the places where I have worked consider the Betty Azar series as the grammar bible.  I agree that the charts and explanations are quite good.  There are three levels, in three colors, red is the <em>Basic English Grammar</em>, blue, and then black which has a different name (<em>Fundamentals of English Grammar</em>).  I also appreciate the Marcella Frank's <em>Modern English: Exercises for Non-native Speakers</em> (two volumes).

I only have one English grammar book in French, which I got just in case I needed it but since have never used it.  From Hatier, by Michael Swan and Francoise Houdart <em>Pratique de l'Anglais de A a Z. </em>It has a separate volume for the exercises.  It looks really organized and thorough.

Currently, and after tried some different books, the best concise English grammar book written in English is The Grammar in Use series, from basic (High beginning – Low intermediate) to advanced (Upper-intermediate – Proficiency), by Cambridge English. Is a self-study and best-selling book and it really works very good. You have some specific theory with some exercises related. Besides, you have more interesting parts: a study planner (a collection of grammar exercises for deciding what you need to "refresh" or studying), a general grammar reminder, additional exercices and key to exercices. This book is comprehensive as well, and with basic level of English, is better if you work with a totally English written book.

I don't know if u have studied the book "Grammar in use",

it is a complete grammar book for beginners to advanced levels.
