Clothing and clothes, not cloths!
I speak to a large number of Chinese people on a regular basis, and it interests me when I notice the same errors time and time again. It makes me wonder if it’s the way it’s being taught in schools, or just a part of the language that is challenging.
The most recent relates to clothes or clothing. Perhaps the problem is a combination of the two words.
Effectively someone will say, “I’m just getting changed into some new cloths” (ie clothes without the e).
Q “What are you doing?”
A “Buying some cloths”
Remember to always add an e in there for the plural version of clothing. Cloth is a noun. You would never say ‘A cloth’ – it would be something like ‘a roll of cloth’ or ‘a piece of cloth.’ We wouldn’t then say ‘use cloth to make clothes’ – instead we would say, ‘Fabric’.
Anyhow – one object: an item of clothing.
Multiple: Look at all the clothing. There’s lots of clothing choice. OR – where are my clothes?
Either / or is fine. Just remember it’s never ‘cloths’. I see cloths often – put an e in there!
“Im going to get changed into some fresh clothes.”
“I need to put my clothes into the wash.”
“Be back in a moment, just getting changed” (‘getting changed’ means changing clothes – and is a natural way to say it.)

Qiao pay attention to the pronunciation too - Cloth is a short 'o' like 'clot' and the clothes 'o' is long as in 'close'. Another similar pair is 'Breath' and Breathe' again the second is like Clothes a long vowel, and the first is short... the vowels of Breath and Breathe are like those of Bred and Breed

I think the problem is not that they can´t distinguish the words, may be they just reduce the vowel and it sounds like that. I just noticed that I probably pronounce it wrong as well. So thanks. :) I remembered a guy whose family name was Lovelace and he was so sad because here everybody pronounced it as Loveless, the vowel reduction is common in Russian and it results in this type of errors.
