Fiction or non-fiction books? TOEFL PRACTICE, writing section. Even though non-fiction books bring learning experiences with real, useful facts about our world and humanity, I have to say that I definitely enjoy more the fiction books. I have nothing against non-fiction books, furthermore, I enjoy them very much, but there are several reasons why I always look for fantasy in my readings: the most important reason is that I appreciate human creativity more than any other human skill. That's why, for me, a fictional book is a piece of art reflecting how unlimited is the imagination of the author. One of the best examples of this is my favorite writer; J. R. R. Tolkien, who created a whole world inhabited with lots of human-like species fighting in amazing epic wars. He didn't only create the stories; he also inspired with them the creation of movies and board games. A second reason for me to prefer fictional books is that I look for variety in my routine when reading. Sometimes you just want to relax and forget about the issues of your daily work, which for me is easier to accomplish with fantasy than with biographies or historical books. A final reason to mention is that most of my favorite fictional books belong to a series of books. So, when you finish reading your wonderful story you don't get the feeling of emptiness because the fun has ended; on the contrary, you can go for the next book in the series, maybe with the surprise that this could become your new favorite one. All in all, reading is an amazing and healthy way of entertainment no matter what kind of books you like. But for me, books are like ships that help you to travel with imagination and I want to travel a lot farther than what we already can do in reality.

Fiction or non-fiction books? TOEFL PRACTICE, writing section.

Even though non-fiction books bring learning experiences with real, useful facts about our world and humanity, I have to say that I definitely enjoy more the fiction books more.

"More" can be placed b/f fiction but it is awkward. "More" nearly always comes at the end. Don't use "the" in front of "fiction books" because you also didn't use "the" in front of "non-fiction books."

I have nothing against non-fiction books, furthermore, I enjoy them very much, but there are several reasons why I always look for fantasy in my readings. The most important reason is that I appreciate human creativity more than any other human skill. That's why, for me, a fictional book is a piece of art reflecting how unlimited is the imagination of the author is. One of the best examples of this is my favorite writer;, J. R. R. Tolkien, who created a whole world inhabited with by lots of human-like species fighting in amazing, epic wars. He didn't only create the stories;: he also inspired with them the creation of movies and board games with them.

Moving "with them" to the end sounds more natural. I use the colon because the second sentence gives further explanation to your first sentence.

I moved "is" to the end because this is a very common mistake I notice (even in some native speakers, so it's not a bad mistake). The part after the "how" is very similar to a question, but it is not structured the same way a question is. There is a slight difference. Compare:

Question: "Where are the books?"

In a sentence (correct): "I don't know where the books are."

Wrong: "I don't know where are the books."

Question: "How unlimited is the imagination of the author?"

In a sentence: "I don't know how unlimited the imagination of the author is."

Comma usage: use if there's only one in the world, or preceded by "a," "an," "some," or a number.

(There is only one German chancellor)

One of my favorite world leaders is the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.

I approve of the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.

(With "a")

A Michigan citizen, John Doe, spoke out against the new taxes.

(With "some")

Some no name political parties, the Alliance for Democracy and the Orange-Purple Party, showed up at the rally.

(With number)

Two citizens, John Doe and Jane Doe, spoke out against the new taxes.

(There are many US Senators)

One of my favorite politicians is the US Senator Marco Rubio.

(You have many sons)

My son Sam is good at math.

There are two types of adjectives, cumulative and coordinate. Coordinate adjectives can have an "and" between them. Cumulative cannot (they "build on" each other).

Coordinate:

The big, green house => the big and green house.

Cumulative:

The cheap Berlin apartment /=> the cheap and Berlin apartment.

The expensive Chinese house /=> the expensive and Chinese house.

You should be able to hear the difference.

Sometimes you can use both, but the meaning changes.

"The deep, religious experience" => "the deep and religious experience"

But

"The deep religious experience" also makes sense. I can't explain right now, since I'm tired, but I'll look it up later. It's a very subtle difference and you probably won't encounter it often.

So, when you finish reading your wonderful story you don't get the feeling of emptiness because the fun has ended: on the contrary, you can go for the next book in the series, maybe with the surprise that this it could become your new favorite one.

Colon use: same as first reason.

All in all, reading is an amazing and healthy way of entertainment no matter what kind of books you like. But for me, books are like ships that help you to travel with imagination and I want to travel a lot farther than what we already can do in reality.

By the way, I did not know all the punctuation/grammar off the top of my head. I have an English grammar exam tomorrow and I'm studying the same things you are.

@Tom P: ok, thank you! Would it be better to say "A final reason could be that..." because I avoided the usage of "the final reason is", which I think sounds like "I have no more reasons" and I wanted to leave the impression that I had lots of reasons and then I chose a couple of them. Maybe I am overthinking the phrase, I don't know, does it makes sense to you? I will keep in mind the book Dune! I have a gift card waiting to be exchanged, I think I'll go to the bookstore :) A correction on what you wrote: Si te gustaN LOS libros de fantasia, mi favoritO es 'Dune'.

@Chris: haha thanks for the comment, you are only 44 years old, right? so don't say you are old!! Here is the correction of what you wrote in Spanish: Has cambiado tu imagen; en la nueva TE VES como una estrella de cine (uno mira= one looks, one sees). ESTOY celoso (estoy=a temporary situation, something happening in the moment, soy= generally used with things that defines you permanently. Examples: I am a Colombian student, I am a perfectionist= Yo soy un estudiante colombiano, yo soy un perfeccionista. I am worried, I am cleaning my bedroom= Estoy preocupado, estoy limpiando mi habitacion) PORQUE yo parezco mayor en mis fotos y me escondo cuando alguien tiene una camara. Ahora tratar'e (future) de correjir su articulo, SI ES QUE (if it is the case) tiene errores.

I have to say that I definitely enjoy more the fiction books. This would sound better as, I have to say that I definitely enjoy fiction books more. A final reason is ok, but would sound better with the final reason. si te guesta libros de fantasia, mi favorita es 'Dune'.

Tatiana  Extremely well written and your message came across very strongly on your thoughts on books.  No major errors at all, of any kind, even punctuation.  Good job, even if his books are too long and drag on too much...
