I think a class can be interpreted as a course or a lesson depending on the context in which it is used.
Let's say, someone asks, "What classes are you taking this semester?"
You may say, "English, math, chemistry..." So in this case, each class means an academic course.
Another example, "Do you have any classes this afternoon?"
You may answer, "no, no classes for me this afternoon. I am going straight home after lunch."
So in this case, no classes means no lesson.
