Bartender, an interesting job

Most people think a bartender is just a special waiter in a bar; that bartending is an evil job. Liquor makes people drunk, liquor makes people crazy, and liquor makes people commit crime. They think that bartenders just mix liquor and sell it to people. However, after I watched the Japanese anime film, “BarTender”, I changed my own thinking about this kind of work.

Bartenders are artists. They do not just mix liquors; they make cocktails that are works of art. The Margarita was created by John Durlesser at the All American Cocktail Contest in 1949. John Durlesser was a bartender at a Los Angeles restaurant called, Tail’O the cock. When he was young, he went hunting with his beautiful girlfriend. Unfortunately, she was hit by a stray bullet and died. Margarita was taken from the name of his girlfriend who had died twenty-three years before the contest. These days he must think of her all the time. In a Margarita there is lemon juice which represents his feelings, salt rim which represents his tears, and Tequila which represents his Mexican girlfriend. Margarita is a cocktail of love. Maybe you think it just a fictitious story that was created by John Durlesser because he wanted to win the contest. Fact is, this story wasn’t revealed until decades later. In a 1970 interview, John Durlesser made public for the first time that Margarita was the name of his dead lover. In other words, the story was not created for publicity.

Bartenders are inventors. The Bloody Mary is a good example. One of the most famous stories about the Bloody Mary is connected to Prohibition. It was in fact created during this time. It is made up of tomato juice, vodka and lemon juice, and when prepared, looks just like tomato juice. There are also spices and flavorings in it so that you cannot easily taste the vodka. It was very popular during that time because it avoided police detection.

Bartending is a tough job. A company president would never talk about his problems to others, however, in a bar; every customer becomes an ordinary person. While the customer speaks to a bartender, they are actually conversing with their own hearts and their own past. Therefore, a bartender’s most important job is to listen to the customers’ stories. Stories about spirit are nothing more than the impetus for that. For this reason, bartenders should be of high quality and also very knowledgeable. They should be able to help customers solve problems and make them happy when they are in the bar.
