蒙學漢文初階 - 第一課 Beginning Literary Chinese Entry Level - Lesson 1 From a very unlikely source, a Korean book for learning literary Chinese and also a great way to practise my translation! I have to thank Kuiwon (歸源) for this. http://kuiwon.wordpress.com/ This is mainly for Chinese learning English. So I am skipping all the commentaries and footnotes. For those interested, you can find them in my blog. 天地之間, Between Heaven and Earth, 有人焉, where there is man, 有萬物焉. and a myriad things. 萬物之眾, Within these multitudes, 最貴者, those who are deemed the most precious, 以其有 are those that possess 五倫也 the Five Relationships. Between Heaven and earth where man had come from; where a myriad of things had sprung forth, the most precious of all these are those that posses the [knowledge of the ] Five Relationships.

My favourite one is "A New Practical Primer of Literary Chinese" by Paul Rouzer. Thank you for your comments. It is indeed rare for to find others having the same interest. Perhaps, at least you will be the one to discuss things with. This is mainly for translation purposes for those wanting to learn English through their native Chinese, I mean the serious ones.

If you find any more good primers for free I would be interested. I took one year (two semesters) of classical Chinese in college and it was a delight. One of the primers was written by Professor Chou at Princeton (http://www.princeton.edu/eas/people/display_person.xml?netid=cpchou&display=All) and your posts remind me of better days when I was around students and teachers more literate of Chinese language, history, and classics. These days I seldom come across anyone with an understanding of classical Chinese.

Thank you for the info. I shall look into it as well. At least this Korean primer is free on the internet :)

中国清朝时也出现一本书叫《澄衷蒙学堂字课图说》,专为小学生识字之用,类似字典。

A blog of Koreans learning literary Chinese but written in English. It's a great website to see how sinicized cultures look at Chinese culture and it's interpretation. Traditional Korean deemed themselves as the legitimate inheritors of the Chinese Ming.
