IELTS writing task 2 answer (24) (television, a good or bad influence on cultural development?) Question: "Television has had a significant influence on the culture of many societies. Do you think it has positively or negatively affected cultural development?" Answer: The proliferation of television has long since revolutionised our lives. Although I acknowledge that this trend has some downsides, I would argue that it has a positive impact on cultural development in general. It is true that too much exposure to foreign TV shows may lead to a lack of cultural identity. Major powers in the world today have a huge amount of capital to make TV series a highly cost effective industry, so their shows, especially American shows are popular all around the world. People can easily adopt values and thinking methods from these shows and eventually let their own culture fade out. On the other hand, intercultural communication via TV shows helps to enable peaceful development between different cultures. Few people have opportunities to actually meet foreigners, foreign TV shows, therefore, can be a medium for people to gain an idea about how things are done in other cultures. As a result, people can learn to be more tolerant towards foreign values and thus wars are less possible to be triggered. This is absolutely beneficial to every culture. In addition, high quality foreign television shows may enable domestic cultures to seek improvement. It is undeniable that every culture has its merits and downsides, and most of the time, people who are immersed in their own cultures since birth time do not realise the disadvantages of their cultures. It is necessary for them to have opportunities to view other cultures, gain a brand new perspective and thus make their own cultures better. Oversea TV programmes provide such opportunities. In conclusion, I believe television has played a positive role in many cultures’ development on the whole, although it has indeed some negative influences.
