If I understand your question, the answer is that you would go down a path.  Here are some examples of both 'down' and 'through':

I will go through the door.

I will go down the path.

I will go through the gate.

I will go down to the river.

Go through / down

At the end of the road there is a path. I wonder is if i I can go through/ down it .
