words and phrases comparison I always have many confusion about some words and phrases' difference since I began to learn English. some words look very similar with each other. for example, there are three words: swipe , sweep, wipe. They share a lot of similarity of capitals/characters, phonetics and pronunciation. I guess many people like me sometimes misunderstood them and use them in a improper way. sometime, I would say ' sweep the table and floor', but now I prefer to say 'wipe the table and sweep the floor'. also I used to write 'sweep the cards, and now I would swipe my access card. I think personally that the three words derived from the same origin and have the almost same movement. every working day, I need swipe my card twice. one is for going to office and the other is for getting off work. also I often wipe the food table and sweep the floor on weekend.

[1] Items cannot "share similarity".  Items are either similar or dissimilar.

[2] It would be simpler to write, "They have similar spelling and pronunciation."

Be sure to use a capital letter for the first letter of every sentence.

Nice entry!!  I understand that that can be very confusing!  Just for your information, I looked it up.  Sweep is the oldest word from the 13th century.  It was originally a noun, and is probably the source of the word swipe (also originally a noun) in the 19th century.  Swipe as a verb originally meant 'to steal'.  It wasn't until the 1990's that it came to be the motion used for using a credit card (or access card).  So yes, nice guess!  Swipe probably derived from sweep.  Wipe, on the other hand, doesn't have any information connecting it to the other two.  They could be!  But etymologists (people who study the history of words) don't know.
