IELTS writing task 1 (second attempt) The chart compares the figures of male and female students doing research across a range of six disciplines related to science at a UK university in 2009. As can be seen from the chart, the number of male students tended to be higher than the number of females in most of the subjects considered. Particularly one-sided was the situation in Physics, where men were approximately five times as many as women. Significant discrepancies were evident also in Astronomy and Geology, where the figure for males was roughly twice as great as for females. In Biology and Medicine, although the number of men doing research was higher, the gap was less pronounced and the two genders were more equally represented. The only field in which the pattern appeard to be reverse was Veterinary Medicine, with females slightly outnumbering males (115 vs. 90). To conclude, it is clear from the chart that science-related subjects were broadly dominated by men; however, the female presence tended to be significant in those fields concerning medicine and the study of living things.
