The Role of Government
As soon as Sumer established their first urban civilization of human history, located in the Southern Iraqi province of Mesopotamia, labour restructuring was instigated. A vague government body was constituted in order to divide the labor force into different types of work, along with distributing the results of labor. According to Rousseau, in The Social Contract of 1762, human beings were willing to be governed because government provided protection and justice. When the government exceeds the boundaries set in place by the people, it is the mission of the people to abolish such government, and establish anew. In modern society, government is more complicated because of increased population and globalization; but the role of any governing party is to bring the justice and create benefits to their people. This is established via two main means: constitution and education.
The government should always uphold the authority of the constitution and laws for justice because it supports the creation of a safe environment for people to live. As is commonly known, constitution and laws attempt to enforce fairness and equality, and provide a system for punishing those who violate it. Without justice, there would be nothing to stop wrongdoings from happening and nothing to prevent, as well as punish, people for doing things against the law. Justice is important because it places a standard of good over all citizens which aims to support society to the right direction. In contrast, regimes within history who have violated justice were collapsed and brought disasters to their people.
In addition to uphold justice, the role of government should also create essential benefits such a strong education system to their people. A stable and democratic society is impossible without widespread acceptance of social values. Without knowledge, such a society is often deemed impossible. Thus, education plays an important role in modern society and contributes to both goals of values and knowledge. The Chinese government has provided free 12 years general education aimed at developing the foundation of their country and to support its success through supporting technological innovation and economic development in the past three decades. Moreover, higher education such as colleges and universities are locations where students learn formal advanced knowledge that would be advantageous to their critical thinking and professional life. The United States has the most highly developed higher education system around the world, providing advantages to the nation's technological industries.
