TOEFL ESSAY
Technology is becoming more present in people’s daily lives in the last few years, thus, children are born in a high-tech era. In my perspective, this technological environment does interfere harmfully on these new little citizens’ imagination process. I feel this was for two main reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
First of all, the internet provides us with lots of information. Therefore, nowadays people do not need to think too much about a doubt, instead, they go on Google and quickly have the answer they want. I noticed that this process of googling has become automatic for most persons, also it has an impact on children’s lives. I will use my cousin as an example; Lucas was born in 2010 so he always had a computer at home. Every time he needs to do a school project, he gets directly on the computer and goes to YouTube to search for ideas on what to do. This action stops him from using his own creative thinking process, in other words, he does not develop his creativity.
Secondly, the popularity of YouTube is an aggravating factor for this significant availability of knowledge caused by online browsers. Besides showing Lucas different options for his homework, YouTube - being a video platform - also exhibits images, which is different from Google that only provides written work. That means this video source is even more harmful for kids’ thoughts’ creation because they do not have to imagine the idea that is being described anymore. My cousin’s assignment was a helmet drawing, but instead of drawing one out of his imagination, he wrote down on YouTube “how to draw a helmet” and simply copied it.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that new virtual resources make children less capable of developing a creative thinking. The reason why is that on the web they have everything ready to be copied, and because this stops them from imagining something original.
