successive vs consecutive What is the difference between these two words? For example, should I say "He won three successive championships" or "He won three consecutive championships"? "successive occasions" or "consecutive occasions"? Thank you.

I would say that consecutive is more commonly used than successive, especially when referring to sports.

This is a fine distinction, as you probably know. There is little if any difference in dictionary meaning, so this is about "normal usage" rather than right or wrong. I'd tend to agree, though, with those who think that "consecutive" is probably more normally used in your context. https://wikidiff.com/consecutive/successive http://synonymstips.blogspot.com/2009/08/consecutive-vs-successive.html https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/successive-vs-consecutive.3229114/
