Disney's and traditional Mulan Do you know Hua Mulan, the heroin of a Chinese tale? She was an ordinary maiden who disguised as a man and joined the army in her old father's place. Maybe many of you have watched the Disney's cartoon, Mulan. But the cartoon has some differences when compared with the tale I heard. Considering an individual as the body of value, the American emphasis on one's freedom of thought and action. They treasure the triumph brought by an individual's effort. Such kind of theory makes the stereotype in Disney’s of Hollywood’s films, which means the pursuit of the hero’s own wish and the complex mental process. In this film, Mulan won other’s respect by her perseverance. Making the avalanche to bury the enemy shows her personal wit. At last, she saved the emperor and the country. In this process of making miracles, she recognized herself gradually. The film can be considered as a legend of an ordinary girl’s extraordinary journey of self-discovery. Even Mulan admitted that what she have done may be for herself instead for her father, by hoping finding herself a useful and respectful person someday. The journey of Mulan presents the theme of love and duty, which has moved us deeply. But it violates the Chinese tradition of temperate modesty. The Chinese tale concentrates on filial piety, a phrase which is out of my current English vacabulary. Filial piety means respect owed to one's parents.
