Profesyonel Öğretmen教科書を使わずに会話などから学習するメリットは会話に長けることです。デメリットは言葉の文化と正しい文法が学習できる環境ならばいいのですが、そうでない人は言葉の文化が理解できず、状況に適した言葉遣いができないことと、文法の間違いが多いことなどが挙げられます。なので相手に間違った情報を与えてしまうことが多いように思います。
The merit of studying through conversations etc. without using a textbook is that you’ll be proficient at conversation. While this is fine if you’re in an environment where you can also learn correct grammar and the cultural nuance of words, a demerit is that people who aren’t in that type of environment don’t understand the cultural aspect of words, they can’t change their wording appropriately for each situation, and they make many grammatical mistakes. As a consequence, I think they often accidentally convey wrong information to their partner.
Because of all this, my opinion is that it’s better to have a textbook than to not have one. Textbooks provide the fundamentals of Japanese, and it’s better to see conversations with Japanese people as an application of that.
The intermediate-level book “Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese” writes a little more about this, but part of the “practical application” of Japanese is the way many words vary by gender, generation, situation, region, personality, etc. It’s difficult to find explanations for this with a textbook, which creates confusion. This is a distinct feature of Japanese, so it can’t be avoided. This aspect of practical application is a reason that beginners develop the opinion, “I think Japanese people usually don’t speak textbook Japanese.” Because they’re beginners, it’s simply not enough to only have knowledge of the level of applied Japanese found in movies, TV shows, and from listening to conversations between Japanese people.
