Today was very hot. I had an Italian class at university, and I was able to understand a little of what the teacher said. I was happy because Italian is usually very difficult for me. After school, I went to my part-time job and worked for a few hours. It was a busy day, but I was glad that I could learn something new in class.

Lovely writing! I would say 'I was able to learn something new' here, because you successfully did so, rather than simply having the opportunity to do it.
