If you 'read between the lines' it means you are able to understand the real message in what you are reading or hearing, a meaning that is not available from a literal interpretation of the words. You understand more than is actually said or written. 'Jane said that she would have gone to the party if she'd had time but if you read between the lines, I don't think she wanted to go anyway.'

Hi To try to understand someone's real feelings or intentions from what they say or write Ex : Reading between the lines, I'd say that Martin isn't very happy with the situation.

"read between the lines" implies a message which isn't made explicit. this requires a sensitive feeling and good analytical skill, I suppose. In most cases, you don't have to interpret things literally. okay, based in our culture: for instance you're such a lazy guy and in everyday life, you do nothing but to lay down on the sofa and watch tv programs. now, If I say: "I just prepared a meal. I don't want to disturb you, you might miss out your favorite tv shows. keep lying and take your meal while watching... go on." If you only knew how to read between the lines, you might interpret that I'm kinda upset and insulting him. :)

“To read between the lines” means to see some hidden context or understand something that is left unvoiced. Example: “don’t trust her, if you can read between the lines you would see that she is lying”
