The "t" sound is correct.
However, as with all spoken language, people will tend to slip into what is easier for the mouth to form.
Since "d" is just a little easier to say than "t", you will hear "muddering" a great deal in spoken English.
That is also why you will hear "wanna" instead of the correct "want to"
Here's a common one for you:
"Let's go out." -> spoken English -> "Skwout"
Another:
"Do you have the time?" -> "Joo 'ave the time?
"Got you!" -> "Gotcha!"

fdmaxey! You are playing fast and loose with the language, but yours is the best answer. Every student needs to realize that North America is a pretty big place and in the east they speak differently and the "d" is not mixed with the "t" so much, as it is in the west. Words like "letter", "water", "twenty" and "wash" come out sounding like "ledder", "wader", "twenee" and "worsh" out here in the American West. Welcome to cowboy English. I ain't pullin' yer leg, neither!
