Never use "em lado", It's wrong and there is no meaning.
"do lado" and "ao lado" are the same thing.

acho melhor usar 'ao lado' exemplo:
Maria está ao lado de José.
(Maria is next to the José)

O correto é "ao lado", contudo, você escutará também "de lado" - devido ao português informal.
