What is the difference between "いえ" and "うち" ?

Hello rjcorraya, I let me suggest those elements of an answer: 家(いえ) refers more to the building rather than the concept of 'your own home' 私の家は大きいです。My house is big. I buy a big house. うち means the house as home (one's own). It carries the social concept of group (one's family; one's household) He is out. (He is away from home). He has left his family. I eat in [at home] だれかうちにいるか? Anybody home? You have also another word which is宅(たく). It means: house; home. And it is usually used for someone else's home more formal. I will call you tomorrow at your house. For the use of宅(たく) http://www.italki.com/answers/question/145263.htm And I leave it to the Japanese mother tongues to go over in greater detail the answer. Hope that it will be helpful. Have a nice day.

Hmm what I've noticed is..., うち sounds more colloquial than いえ. I use うち more in daily, casual conversation, and いえ when I want to sound more formal. And... うち often implies "MY home/house", not just "home/house".
