How (and when) to use 'upon' and 'on' properly in a sentence? Are these words the same?
I've tried to look up some usages of 'upon' in sentences and just found that 'upon' means the same as 'on', though it's more formal. But even so I can't get it very well - I don't know when I have to use upon instead of on or if both of them can be used in the sentence.
Thanks in advance.

That is correct--"upon" is more formal. You could probably just use "on" and never use "upon". I can't remember the last time I used "upon" in a sentence. You would probably use "upon" in a literary or poetic sense.
