What's the meaning of "unfuck" here? Murph and I walked to Sterling and stood at parade rest. “All right, little man,” he said, “I want you to get in Bartle’s back pocket and I want you to stay there. Do you understand?” Murph looked at me before he answered. I tried to make a face that would clearly communicate the need for his answer to come quickly, and for it to be directed toward Sergeant Sterling. But he didn’t answer, and Sterling smacked him on the side of the head, knocking his cover to the ground, where little drifts of snow sketched the December wind. “Roger, Sergeant,” I said. I pulled Murph toward the awning of the barracks door, where a cluster of guys from second platoon were smoking. As we walked, Sterling called behind us, “You guys seriously need to unfuck yourselves. None of you people get it.” What's the meaning of "unfuck" in the last paragraph? Thanks!

Hello Gordon. How are you? "Unfuck" is of course, a variant of profanity; but it is a particularly powerful expression, and a very "grating" one. That is, it is such a strong language that it "burns your ears" as the expression goes. It indicates, first of all, that you are a person who is really, and truly, "very confused" or "very messed up". It is rather like saying that you are going through life with your Head---Stuck---Up---Your----Own---Backside. It's is the sort of term one might see in a novel, or in spoken English. One would not want to write such an expression in any formal context. A military instructor in a "Boot Camp" might use such language with someone, or an aggressive employer or manager might use such an expression to show extreme anger with employees. You see? I think Americans in particular, like to use expressions like this. It conveys an extremely violent and aggressive approach to Getting---Things---Done. Goal Driven people can be extremely aggressive, and it is certainly true that aggressive language serves for a warning of a potential threat of violence, etc.---Warm Regards, Bruce
