"go it alone" Could you give me alternative expressions of "go it alone"? Is it different from "do it alone"? If so, what is the difference? Example sentences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi elanvital 'Go it alone' is idiomatic, and doesn't always mean 'to go' somewhere on your own. It means 'to do something without other people' BUT not in all situations. It needs to be in a situation where the person/company/country is either giving up or rejecting help and support from others. For example 'Jim has decided to leave the band and go it alone as a solo artist.'. We don't use this idiom in situations where it is nothing special to be doing something by yourself - we don't say, 'I have been driving by myself for 5 years, and will go it alone (again) today' or Tom walks to school everyday by himself and will go it alone (again) today'. However, we might say: 'Susan has been driving with her brother for 6 months, but today will be the first time she goes it alone' or 'Tom's mother takes him to school everyday, but today he will go it alone'. The emphasis is very much on 'change' and/or 'challenge'. HTH
