"Was" (don't confuse it with the interrogative/relative pronoun) and "irgendwas" are short colloquial forms for "etwas" and "irgendetwas".
"Irgend" is used to strengthen "etwas", maybe one could translate "irgendetwas" as "something at all". That also works for other words like "irgendwo" and "irgendwann".
Haben wir noch etwas im Kühlschrank? = Is there something in the fridge? (neutral)
Haben wir denn noch irgendetwas im Kühlschrank? = Is there anything in the fridge at all? (I'm desperately hungry, I'd eat anything)
Colloquial:
Haben wir noch was im Kühlschrank?
Haben wir denn noch irgendwas im Kühlschrank?
