I'm getting confused!
I understand the whole gender thing but with something like 'it's raining' my brain is just not working on trying to get round the 'it' part!
...?... идёт.
Help?

I understand why you are confused:) In this case there isn't direct translation from English to Russian and vice versa. As I understand in English here "rain" is a verb. In Russian we have a noun "дождь" don't have a verb. If I tried to make direct translation "Дождь идет" it would be "Rain is going" :)

Идет дождь.
Дождь идет.
It's possible to say both of these.
