In my opinion, if you're planning on learning the writing system at all, you should start learning it immediatly. Working with Romaji is a limited market, so to speak. There are many great Japanese learning resources that will have expected you to be weened off Romaji already. Beyond that, by relying on Romaji you're really doing yourself a disservice. All the time you've spent using it could of instead been used practicing reading with Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji while studying. Of course, it is not an instant process...it's probably best to start with Hiragana and get comfortable with that, then move on to Katakana and learn that, then slowly learn Kanji as you go along. Kanji is a slow process, but the sooner you start, the sooner you will be fluent in reading. I say, start learning today. ^^ It's not as hard as it looks as long as you take the time to study it. Flashcards are a huge help!

I absolutely agree with Mytch. There is a good page (http://www.thejapanesepage.com/beginners) where you can learn hiragana and katakana very easily. They use some mnemonic devices that will help you to remember each symbol. For example き (ki) looks like a key... I used then to learn hiragana, and they do work!!
