"Avant, j'ai travaillé avec lui." vs. "Avant, je travaillais avec lui." What is the right way to say "Before, I used to work for him"? Avant, j'ai travaillé avec lui. Avant, je travaillais avec lui. Or is either OK?

Both are correct. The imparfait is used to describe an unfinished action and the passé-composé an action finished. http://www.francaisfacile.com/exercices/exercice-francais-2/exercice-francais-17862.php

I worked for him: j'ai travaillé POUR lui. I used to work for him: je travaillais POUR lui. So both were wrong. As Suki said "used to" really makes the imperfect the tense to use.

The English 'used to' form is usually best translated as the French imperfect: 'je travaillais avec lui'.
