Could someone explain it for me? Question 2: ......But that swine of a Belgian hadn't missed a thing;...... Belgian is a person's name, why does it use "a" in front of people's name? Thanks

'Belgian' isn't a name, it's a person who comes from Belgium. You could just as easily replace 'a Belgian' with 'an Australian', 'an American', 'a Briton', 'a Canadian' etc.

And to answer your second question. 'Belgian' isn't a name - it's a nationality. The person comes from Belgium, so he is a Belgian.

The wording is poetic. "No sooner had I made the slightest gesture than my rage and shame were wiped out." ="My rage and shame were wiped out no sooner than I had made the slightest gesture (to stand up and smash his face)." ="My rage and shame vanished an instant after I made the slightest movement to punch him."
