To make an inversion in french? When we have the question words such as où. comment, porquoi, qu'est-ce que, qui, etc, do we always have to use the inversion. For example, where are you? Où es-tu? And do we always put the dash between the subject and the predicate in the inversion? What are you doing? Qu'est ce que tu fais? Or fais-tu? Is it possible to ask Quoi fais-tu?

Yes, we always put the dashes. No, we can't say 'quoi fais-tu?'. If you want to use the 'que' form you have to say'que fais-tu?' otherwise you can also ask using the affirmative form like 'tu fais quoi?', 'tu vas où?' but thse last forms are more used orally in an informal way.

With "qu'est-ce que" and "est-ce que" you don't invert the subject.

Il est plus fluide et plus correcte de faire une inversion lorsqu'il y a une question, et d'utiliser une intonation interrogative. La fleur que tu donnes Que donnes-tu? Il a dit pour quelle raison il venait. Pour quelle raison est-il venu?
