Read much. Read every day. For me it was effective way. At first it was difficult for me because of my poor vocabulary. But the more i red the wider it was getting. From some point of time i stop to translate the text i red in my native language. I didnt do it consciously. It happened by itself.

One of the best systems I have found is to read with a native speaker. That is you and the native speaker have the same text. After reading aloud a paragraph or two, you can discuss the meaning of what you have read and insure that you grasp the vocabulary and how it interacts to create meaning.
