Could you tell me what's the difference between "opposite" and "opposite to"?
e.g.
There is a market __________ my house. My mother goes across the street
and buys some vegetables every day.
A.next to B.from C.opposite D.opposite to
Answer with "C". People do use "opposite to" as an equivalent expression, but the "to" is really unnecessary.

I do hope this isn't a question from an important exam, as both C and D are acceptable answers. The word 'to' isn't necessary, but it is possible to say 'opposite to'. Nobody would consider it wrong if you said it, and the meaning is the same.
